Even after having moved a few times before, I was still worried about all these things and wondered what this year would have in store for me. Although I'd done my research before coming here, there was still so much I didn't know about the country, the town, the education system, and so much more that I didn't know what to expect.
At some point in my first few days, however, I realized something: I'm in a place I've never been before and there are many things that I don't know about it but that's okay because I'm here to learn. And this switch in mindset made all the difference...
Once I realized that I was here to discover and learn all I could, I became an explorer rather than just a lost nomad. I discovered the beauty of Brighton and my environment.
Brighton is filled with shops of all kinds with an open market setup in an area called the Lanes (shown above). You can find shops ranging from music stores and charity shops (thrift stores) to cafes and restaurants.
Exploring the town only led me to explore more which, in time, helped me meet people who like to do the same.
I have since been able to explore many local hikes and beaches throughout Brighton and meet some amazing people in the process.
Once I let go of the fear of what would happen in this new environment, I was able to embrace it to the point where I can now call Brighton a new home.
When was a time you guys did something that scared you and were glad you did it?
Cheers!
When I was little, I used to be scared of water slides, but after I went on one I was so happy and now water slides are my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI used to feel the same about roller coasters and now I love them! I'm glad you overcame your fear
DeleteRejoining sports, because I moved I couldn't do any of the sports I loved with my friends, but I'm finally doing it again and it's so fun! -Evan
ReplyDeleteI wish I played more sports. I used to play volleyball but there aren't as many opportunities to play anymore. I still play whenever I'm home though.
DeleteI actually, I play volleyball to!
DeleteThat's really cool Evan! What position do you usually play?
DeleteSomething that i was scared of and glad at the same time was when my uncle had a 6 valve by pass of course i was worried but i'm glad he had it cause now he can do everything that he use too.
ReplyDeleteSurgeries can be scary. My grandfather a triple bypass a few years ago but sometimes the benefits outweigh the risks.
Deletebutterflys scare me
ReplyDeleteGeese have always scared me but it helps to remember I'm bigger than them haha.
Deletesomething that scared me was going to the edge of the grand canon and it was a awesome view
ReplyDeleteI used to have a huge fear of heights but hiking and being on high viewpoints helped me to get over it... and also being over 6ft tall haha. The Grand Canyon is high up on my bucket list. I'm so jealous!
DeleteJames- I went on a roller coaster that was very old, so old that it was made of wood that shook and rattled! I am not that fond of roller coasters but, now I am glad that I went on it. It was scary and fun at the same time. Doing it with family and friends sure helped.
ReplyDeleteI used to be terrified of roller coasters until I went on a field trip in the 8th grade. Going with my friends made it a lot easier. It's easier to do things that scare us when we have a good support group. I'm glad you had fun James!
DeleteOne time I did something that scared me was when I moved to a new school and making new friends at the new school was not so easy but I did end up making new friends.
ReplyDeleteI think that's one of the scariest parts of moving to a new place. It can be hard to find a group that makes you feel like you belong, but if you are yourself and put yourself out there, you'll always find people that are worth it!
Deletei do ukulele recitals after my lessons are over. when i first started taking lessons about a year ago, i dreaded going up on stage. when the end of the term came close, i just got more anxious. But, everything went well for my first recital. i was glad i did it because i overcame my fear and that isnt always easy to do
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed! I didn't have the courage to play by myself until my Junior year of high school. Well done for putting yourself out there!
DeletePlanes used to terrify me, but after going on one I'm fine with them and even look forwards to traveling. -Leah
ReplyDeleteMy mom has always had a fear of flying, but I think it helps to know that on the other side is a new place with new adventures in store.
Deletei guess something that scared me is huge crowds of people but ever since i went to the panic at the disco concert i have less anxiety about it
ReplyDeleteThat's ironic haha (panic at the disco) but it's good that you went! Fear can often can get in the way of things that we enjoy but once we take that risk, it's usually worth it.
DeleteHi, Isiah
ReplyDeletewhen you hear this story, keep in mind. I was only 9. So I as at the local mall and I was on the second floor. I was with my mom and nana. we needed to go to the first floor, for some great reason, and that required using the escalator. i soon discovered i had a fear of escalators. my mom and nana went first, trusting I would stay behind them. little did they know i was just letting people go in front of me. but then they made me go down. now i can go down them but i still quiver at the thought.
That's funny because my little sister is 9 and she actually just got over her fear of escalators! In the subways in Europe, the escalators are twice as tall. When visiting my stepdad while he was working in Prague last year, she had to use them all the time and it made American escalators seem less daunting.
ReplyDeleteif you could have any animal what would you have
ReplyDeleteI've really wanted a dog lately but one of my favorite animals is the tortoise. Whenever I'm home and my friend is going out of town, I housesit and hang out with his two tortoises and they seem so wise and calm. They're also very entertaining! What pet would you get?
Deletei understand that we moved from Oregon California to Washington and back to Oregon!!! but again a change of scenery was fun especially the new places to go to
ReplyDeleteWoah, that's a lot of moving! When I moved up to Portland, I felt exactly the same way. I'd lived in California for almost 18 years and was ready for a change in scenery.
